    Believe it or not, it has been 20 years since Facebook was founded. In 2003 the digital platforms landscape looked different from today’s interconnected world. In the early days of social media, the main aim of social media platforms was to create an online space where people could connect and get to know each other. Let’s delve into this interesting Social media revolution, and see how social media has become, so popular.

    The Early Days (2003-2008)

    How we started making friends online:

    In the year 2003 when websites like LinkedIn and Myspace started. These platforms introduce the concept of creating a profile, adding friends, and chatting with them online. It was a new method to communicate with people you knew and maybe even meet new ones.

    In the early days of social media, people used to talk with each other by sending messages, writing on each other’s walls, and chatting in online groups. Back then, it was all about making a small group of close online friends, kind of like a digital version of your best friends’ club. Websites like FRIENDSTER were popular because they helped you do just that, with features like your “Top 8 Friends.”

    Facebook: Facebook was launched in 2004 and became super popular. It is easy to use and lets you share pictures and videos with your family and friends. It also had a news feed that showed you what your friends were up to, like a digital newspaper.
    YouTube: YouTube was launched in 2005 and it became the first sharing videos and music platform.
    Twitter: Twitter was launched in 2006 with its short messages(tweets). This platform allows people to share quick updates and keep up with the latest news.  
    In 2007, Tumblr, a different microblogging platform, was launched and gained popularity within niche fandom communities. It attracted 75,000 users within two weeks and presently accommodates nearly 500 million blogs.

    Smartphones Change Everything: When smartphones became so popular, social media increased dramatically even more. People can now check their social media feeds and chat/call with friends and Family anywhere and anytime.

    There are a few apps like Instagram which was launched in 2010, and Snapchat, which was launched in 2011 were made for smartphones and focused on sharing photos and videos.

    2011: Platforms like Twitch let people broadcast themselves live, creating a new way to connect and interact.  2012: Facebook buys Instagram.

    2013:In 2013, a new app called Vine came out and changed how people used video on their phones. Vine was all about making short, funny clips.2014: In 2014, another app called Musical.ly joined the party. This one was all about creating short videos where you sing along to your favorite songs, kind of like karaoke but on your phone.  
    2015: In 2015, a new app called Discord hit the scene. It was made specifically for gamers, letting them chat and talk to each other instantly while playing games.2016: TikTok (2016) brought on the era of short videos. These quick and entertaining clips are perfect for our busy lives.

    2020: BeReal was launched in 2020. This app is all about sharing photos which are unedited clicks once a day with friends and family.2020: A new app called Clubhouse which was really famous during the pandemic. It was super popular at first, but its popularity faded a bit when things went back to normal.

    2021: Yikyak was launched in 2021.

    Conclusion

    Social media is a constantly growing landscape, with new platforms rising all the time. As we have seen, just a few years can bring tons of new methods to connect and share online. There are apps for funny short videos (TikTok), keeping it real with friends (BeReal), chatting anonymously (YikYak), and even fancy voice chat rooms (Clubhouse). Some apps get super popular for a while, then others take their place. The interesting part is there’s something for everyone.

    Social media is always changing, and who knows what new apps will come up next? But one thing for sure is that social media will keep on emerging how we connect with friends, family, and even strangers. The future of social media is unwritten, but one thing is certain: it will be exciting to see what new ways to connect and share emerge in the years to come.
