In a significant stride toward modernizing the nation’s media landscape, the Computer Association of Nepal (CAN) Federation, in association with FEJA, Tech Bloggers Association of Nepal (TBAN) and Sunway College Kathmandu, successfully hosted a comprehensive workshop on “AI in Journalism” on 26th July 2026 at Anupam Foodland, Battisputali, Kathmandu.
The high-profile event was designed to Empower Journalism by using AI, bringing together journalists, media executives, and digital innovators to navigate the intersection of modern technology, ethical reporting, and newsroom automation.
Transforming the Newsroom Through Technology
The workshop featured an intensive curriculum focused on preparing media professionals for the digital age. Key objectives addressed during the sessions included:
Demystifying Artificial Intelligence & Prompt Engineering: Introducing foundational machine learning principles and providing hands-on training in crafting precise prompts to extract accurate insights from large language models.
Combating Misinformation and Deepfakes: Equipping participants with digital forensics and verification techniques to detect synthetic media, fake news, and disinformation.
Enhancing Investigative Reporting & Workflows: Demonstrating how data analytics and automation tools can streamline transcription, translation, and routine tasks, allowing reporters to focus on in-depth investigative stories.
Upholding Ethics and Data Security: Establishing robust frameworks for transparency, accountability, cloud-based data privacy, and source protection.
Leadership Insights and Vision
The program was chaired by CAN Federation Acting President and CEO of One Cover Private Limited, Chiranjibi Adhikari. In his presidential address, he commended Sunway College Kathmandu and the Tech Bloggers Association of Nepal for providing expert AI mentors and facilitators. He underscored the critical need for robust mechanisms against misinformation and disinformation, emphasizing ongoing awareness initiatives to safeguard the credibility of information.
FEJA President Sharmila Thakuri highlighted that the strategic partnership with the CAN Federation marks a monumental milestone toward empowering and educating female journalists in emerging digital technologies.
Delivering the welcome speech, Sunway College Kathmandu Director Simoli Desai praised IT industry leader Chiranjibi Adhikari for championing the platform. She announced plans for future collaborative training programs to ensure continuous technical education for media professionals.
Additionally, the President of the Tech Bloggers Association of Nepal Santosh Dhungana noted that future-focused seminars and conferences will continue to expand, stressing the importance of AI literacy for digital content creators and bloggers alike.
The event drew prominent industry figures, including CAN Federation Founder President Bimal Kumar Sharma, CAN Federation Former President Lochan Lal Amatya, and Tech Bloggers General Secretary Abhash Adhikari.
