Telecommunications Authority Hands Over 20 Satellite Phones: Communication Expected to Be Easier in Disaster Relief Efforts

With the objective of preventing communication breakdowns during disasters and making rescue and relief efforts more effective, the Nepal Telecommunications Authority has taken an important step. To provide communication services even in remote and affected areas where regular telecom networks do not function, the Authority has provided 20 satellite phones.

Key Features

Source of Support: Received as disaster assistance from the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

Handover: Handed over by the Nepal Telecommunications Authority to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority.

Distribution and Area: A total of 20 phones, 10 each, have been sent to Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts.

Special Concession: These satellite phones can be used completely free of charge for the next three months.

Ease of Communication in Disaster-Affected Areas

This technology is expected to prove highly effective in facilitating information flow in the recently flood-affected areas of Bhotekoshi in Rasuwa. This technology, which allows access to phone calls and SMS services via satellite even in remote areas without access to regular telecom networks, is considered very expensive worldwide.

It is believed that this timely decision taken by the government and relevant bodies will greatly assist rescue workers in exchanging emergency information and establishing contact with citizens in affected areas during disasters.
