September 12, Kathmandu.

Kathmandu Metropolitan City has provided a grant of one crore rupees to Kirtipur Hospital for burn treatment and health service improvement.

The acting chief of the Metropolitan City, Sunita Dangol, handed over a check for the said amount to the hospital during a program held at the hospital for the transfer of tools and equipment and the establishment of a burn treatment fund.

Acting Chief Dangol stated that health services should be accessible to every citizen and no citizen should be deprived of treatment due to financial constraints.

She mentioned that the Metropolitan City has been collaborating with various hospitals to end the situation where patients with weak financial conditions are deprived of treatment due to expensive health services.

According to her, the Metropolitan City has been collaborating with various hospitals including Bir Hospital, Trauma Center, Teaching Hospital, Kanti Children’s Hospital, and Gangalal Heart Center. She also stated that collaboration with Kirtipur Hospital has been ongoing since the past.

Dangol informed that the Metropolitan City has provided a lift, X-ray machine, anesthesia machine, and generator to Kirtipur Hospital from the budget of the fiscal year 2081/82. She added that after the use of the modern X-ray machine, the time taken to serve patients has decreased, and the long waiting period for service seekers has been reduced.

According to her, an average of 90 to 100 patients are receiving services daily from the X-ray machine. She also mentioned that the hospital is providing more effective services with the anesthesia equipment.

Dangol stated that electricity supply in health services is an extremely sensitive issue and that the generator was handed over to prevent treatment services from being affected by power outages at the hospital. ‘There is no second chance in healthcare. Therefore, treatment services should not be interrupted under any circumstances,’ she said.

She also stated that there has been significant improvement in the field of burn treatment in the last decade. According to her, in 2014, the chance of saving patients with up to 40 percent burns was extremely low, but now the survival rate for such patients has reached approximately 50 percent.

Dangol stated that the hospital aims to increase the survival rate of patients with up to 70 percent burns to at least 50 percent in the next 10 years, and she committed that the Metropolitan City would provide necessary support for this.

She stated that the lack of necessary infrastructure, equipment, and technology is a major challenge in burn treatment, rather than the expertise of doctors and health workers. She emphasized that while developed countries have a high survival rate for severely burned patients, access to modern technology and essential materials must also be expanded in Nepal.

Dangol stated that the Metropolitan City has adopted a policy of not just spending the budget but also investing in necessary and effective areas. She said that after discussions with the hospital, it was decided this time to invest not only in physical infrastructure but also in health services.

‘A hospital is not just a building, equipment, and infrastructure; it is also the services provided from there,’ she said. ‘Therefore, this time we decided to invest not only in infrastructure but also in services.’

The 1 crore rupees provided by the Metropolitan City will be deposited into the hospital’s burn treatment fund. Dangol informed that from this fund, burn patients will be provided free treatment services up to a maximum of 2 lakh rupees.
