In recent years, the term ‘Deepfake’ has increased rapidly. Deepfake can be defined as a person in the original image or video being replaced with someone else. Deepfake is gaining popularity as its software is available to the public. Deepfake is achieved through Artificial Intelligence and machine learning algorithms, commonly called deep learning as technology advances the risk of deepfakes increases. The rise of deepfakes has created negative as well as positive impacts.

What is deepfake?

Deepfakes are based on artificial neural networks created using deep learning algorithms. Those work on a technique called Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs). GANs have two neural networks: a generator and a discriminator. A generator creates a synthetic image while a discriminator evaluates the synthetic image against the real image. The training provided to produce these images and videos is difficult to distinguish from real pictures and videos. Manipulation of images, videos and voices is so realistic that the fake ones also appear real.

Reasons for the Rise of Deepfakes

Advancements in AI and Machine Learning

Progress in AI and neural networks has led to the creation of deepfakes easily. Also, Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) have made it easier to create fake content and discriminators to evaluate authenticity and produce highly realistic images and videos.

Increased Computing Power

The availability of GPUs (Graphics Processing Unit) has made it easier for normal people to create deepfakes. Cloud computing platforms such as Google Cloud, and Azure allow users to create deepfakes without requiring hardware.

Open-source Tools and Tutorials

Various open-source tools like DeepFaceLab, allow anyone to create deepfakes. Along with this, many tutorials and online courses provide a guide on creating deepfakes with a basic understanding of deepfakes.

Entertainment and social media

Deepfakes are used in the entertainment industry for creating special effects, dubbing actors’ voices, and de-ageing actors. Moreover, on social media platforms, the rise of deepfakes is rapidly attracting attention and driving interest in technology.

Political manipulation and propaganda

Deepfakes can be used to create fake news manipulate original content or discredit political opponents. The deepfake in political campaigns has raised significant concerns. There is a risk of deepfakes in elections too which can disorder the democratic process which is a major concern for governments globally.

Economic Incentives

The risk of deepfakes continues in financial fraud. Cybercriminals can use deepfakes for fraud like fake identity, fake news, fake transactions and more.

Positive Rise of Deepfakes

Entertainment and Media

Deepfakes are used to create special effects in movies and TV shows. Platforms like YouTube and TikTok use deepfake technology for videos and other content.

Education and Training

Deepfakes can create avatars for learning, providing an interactive experience. Many institutes use deepfake to create training videos.

Healthcare

Deepfake technology can create avatars for therapy purposes like helping individuals to manage mental health problems. Deepfake is also helpful in creating medical training videos for educational purposes.

Marketing and Advertising

Various brands use virtual influencers created by deepfake technology to advertise their products on social media.

Mitigation and Detection

Technological Solutions

Researchers and developers are developing detection algorithms to identify deepfakes and inconsistencies using AI and machine learning in deepfakes.

Regulation and Legislation

Government bodies are constantly planning and exploring legal policies to address the misuse of deepfakes.

Public Awareness

Different levels of awareness programs are conducted on the rise of deepfakes, helping individuals to cope with the world of deepfakes.

Conclusion

Hence, Deepfakes are rapidly growing worldwide. The rise of deepfakes is a major concern to the technological world. Therefore, everyone should navigate the digital world safely knowing the negative impacts of deepfakes.
