The risk of disaster in the Himalayan region is increasing with climate change: Prime Minister Shah

Prime Minister Balen Shah has stated that the risk of disaster in the Himalayan region is increasing due to climate change.
Addressing a special session of the House of Representatives on Wednesday, Prime Minister Shah stated that the government is engaged in managing the damage caused by the flood in Bhotekoshi of Rasuwa and also emphasized the need for a serious study on how the disaster occurred.
Quoting experts, he said that the flood in the Bhotekoshi River of Rasuwa was caused by glacial outbursts and avalanches in the Himalayan region and was one of the biggest disasters in the region.
Prime Minister Shah said that the incident seriously indicated that the risk of disaster in the Himalayan region is increasing with climate change. He stated that Nepal needs to be more vigilant and prepared to mitigate such risks in the coming days.

He said, ‘While working tirelessly to manage the damage from this sudden major disaster, another deep question has arisen in our minds. That is, how did this disaster befall us? Experts have stated that the flood in the Bhotekoshi River of Rasuwa was caused by glacial outbursts and avalanches in the Himalayan region and is one of the biggest disasters in this region. This incident seriously indicates that the risks we face in the Himalayan region are increasing with climate change. Therefore, we must be vigilant. At the same time, the time has come for us to strongly present the disasters we are facing due to climate change to the international community. Climate change is a global issue. Its impact mitigation and management are understood to be the shared responsibility of the global community.’
He highlighted the need to effectively present the issues of disasters Nepal is facing due to climate change to the international community.
He stressed that the problems faced by Himalayan countries like Nepal due to climate change must be raised seriously at the international level.
